GNU is a Unix-like operating system. The name is a recursive acronym which stands for "GNU's Not UNIX." The OS is comprised completely of free software, which is the goal of the GNU Project. The GNU Compiler Collection, Bourne Again SHell, and GNU Emacs are all members of this free software group.
