:::::::::Well, a version of the function which works regardless of environment settings or OS exists so I'll probably stick with that one as I can be sure it will work on any OS. Out of curiosity I tried it with windows compiled gawk.exe from a Windows 7 console and it doesn't work. The function isn't multi-byte aware, it treats each character as a separate character.
